From Pisa to Lucca: Hiking in the Pisan Mountains
Between the cities of Pisa and Lucca is situated the oldest mountain range of Italy; the Monti Pisani. These low mountains, surrounded by a landscape of gently rolling hills and extensive plains, offer some spectacular views; Pisa in the flatlands below (the tower clearly visible) with the river Arno that winds towards the sea, towards the North the small city of Lucca and the famous white slopes of the Carrara marble quarries on the Apuan Alps, sparkling like snow in the sun.
Rich with fountains and wells, it provided both cities, Pisa and Lucca, with fresh water in the 17th and 18th century by means of impressive aqueducts running from the mountains to the city walls. This historical curiosity forms a core part of the tour.
Start is in Pisa, from where you follow the aqueduct through the flatlands into the mountain range. In the following days the walk continues up towards the highest point before heading down over the northern flanks of the mountains to follow the path of another aqueduct leading to the enchanting city of Lucca.
The landscape you walk through is as varied as the views. Olive orchards alternate with Mediterranean bushes, cork oaks and pine trees, while higher up the hills are dominated by chestnut forests. The tour passes through vineyards and small villages rich with history, passing farmhouses and villas and of course the aqueducts.
The highest mountains in the region reaches around 800m. Since the mountain range is sensitive to forest-fire, unpaved roads cross the region to serve forestry and fire department. The tour makes use of these unpaved roads. In some places the route runs along forest tracks where it's a bit harder finding your way.
Average time of walking on hiking days is about 4/4,5 hours.
